Bacon Salt Recipe: DIY Rim Salt for Bloody Marys

Bacon Salt: The Perfect Combination of Savory and Salty

Bacon salt is one of the simplest seasonings you can make at home. Crispy bacon ground with salt creates a smoky, savory finishing salt that works on everything from eggs to popcorn. But its best application might be rimming a Bloody Mary glass.

A bacon salt rim adds smoky, meaty crunch to every sip. It bridges the drink and the garnish, turning the rim itself into part of the flavor experience. If you have ever used Stu's rim salts like the Sweet Corn Rimmer or Key Lime Celery Salt, bacon salt follows the same principle. The rim is not decoration. It is seasoning.

Classic Bacon Salt Recipe

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes | Makes: About 1/2 cup

Ingredients

  • 3 strips thick-cut bacon
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt or sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Cook bacon until very crispy. You want it dark and snappy, not chewy. The drier the bacon, the better it grinds.
  2. Remove bacon and drain thoroughly on paper towels. Get all the grease off. Residual fat shortens shelf life.
  3. Let bacon cool completely.
  4. Pulse in a food processor until fine and powdery. Add salt and pepper. Pulse a few more times to combine.
  5. Store in an airtight container. Keeps for about two weeks at room temperature or up to a month in the fridge.

Smoky Bacon Salt (with Paprika)

For a more complex version that pairs especially well with Smoked Jalapeno concentrate.

Ingredients

  • 4 strips thick-cut bacon
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

Same method as above. Cook bacon crispy, cool, grind, then combine with the dry ingredients.

The smoked paprika doubles down on the smokiness. This version creates a rim that complements the chipotle notes in the Smoked Jalapeno concentrate.

How to Rim a Glass with Bacon Salt

  1. Spread bacon salt on a shallow plate.
  2. Run a lemon wedge or pickle brine around the rim of your glass. Pickle brine works particularly well because the acidity helps the salt stick and adds tang.
  3. Dip the rim into the bacon salt, rotating to coat evenly.
  4. Fill and pour your drink carefully to keep the rim intact.

For a Bloody Mary, build the drink with Stu's Bloody Mary Concentrate, your choice of tomato juice, and your preferred spirit. The bacon rim adds a smoky crunch to every sip that store-bought rimming salts cannot replicate.

Bacon Salt Beyond the Glass

This seasoning works anywhere you want smoky, salty flavor.

Sprinkle it over scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, or avocado toast. Use it as a finishing salt on grilled corn. Fold it into burger patties for a subtle bacon flavor throughout. Toss it with popcorn for a savory snack.

It also works as a dry rub base for grilled chicken or pork. Combine it with a splash of Stu's Bloody Mary Concentrate for a wet rub that adds even more depth.

Stu's Rim Salt Collection

If you prefer ready-made options, Stu's rim salt collection includes the Sweet Corn Rimmer (dried sweet corn, celery salt, and Chesapeake Bay seasoning) and Key Lime Celery Salt (crushed key lime, celery salt, and chilies). Both ship as part of the Bloody Mary Kit or are available individually.

Making your own bacon salt and pairing it with Stu's premade rim salts gives you a rotation of rim options for hosting. Set out two or three choices and let guests pick their own. That kind of customization is what turns a drink into an experience.

More Ways to Cook with Concentrate

The same concentrate format that makes a great Bloody Mary also works as a steak marinade, a base for BBQ sauce and chili, and a flavor booster for cornbread stuffing and beef jerky.
